I saw the movie today. Please go see it. It’s a spellbinding film. From the music to the costumes, to the cinematography, to the clever allusions to the real Black Panthers and the Civil Rights Movement, to the amazing performances (they were all amazing, but I particularly enjoyed Letitia Wright as Shuri and Danai Gurira as Okoye) it is a marvel of a cinematic work (no pun intended).
What was equally amazing was the turnout for the movie. The audience cosplay was amazing, African and African themed clothing was everywhere to be seen and it was clear from the moment I set foot in the cinema that the audience had as much at stake as the actors. We laughed, cried, clapped and shouted for joy as another knockout hit from director Ryan Coogler unfolded.
Representation really matters. People of color deserve equal opportunities to make the same types of movies that white people make, and profit from. The opportunity was given with this movie and it was a smashing success, as many movies are when you assemble such a talented cast and crew. I hope to see another new movie with a predominately black cast soon.
