Day 268: Stand With Somalia

One of the deadliest terror attacks in the Horn of Africa nation’s history has hit Somalia.

Over 200 people are confirmed dead, though the number could be as high as 500, as a truck bomb exploded in the capitol city of Mogadishu. Al-Shabeb, a rebel faction who has been fighting against the Somali government since 2007 is suspected to be responsible for this horrific incident.

Unfortunately, many of the African governments share responsibility for cultivating conditions that lead people to join terrorist groups. Autocrats on the continent like Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Robert Mugabe and Omar Al Bashir have created nation’s with high unemployment, low literacy rates and corrupt infrastructure.

These conditions are unacceptable. The people deserve better than these monsters. The New Yorker had an amazing story about a month ago of a young woman and her friends who aspired to play basketball in Somalia. Aisha was threatened with death and torture, but never gave up her dreams. Don’t let Donald Trump fool you, these are the real Somalis.

I hope to one day go to the country to check out it’s beautiful beaches and meet some new people. In the meantime, I hope you will consider making a donation to Action Against Hunger, which is helping to combat another crisis in Somalia: drought and famine. Together, we can help change conditions for the better.
