Day 41: How Deep Does This Run?

How deep does this run?

The Washington Post reported yesterday that Jeff Sessions had two meetings with Russian officials after he became a surrogate for the Trump campaign that he did not state when he was under oath during his Attorney General confirmation hearings. According to the Post:

One of the meetings was a private conversation between Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that took place in September in the senator’s office, at the height of what U.S. intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the U.S. presidential race.

These revelations come a week after another Post report that the Trump administration was actively recruiting lawmakers and members of the intelligence community to counter the stories about Russian ties to his campaign. These individuals included two prominent members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, Rep. Devin Nunes and Sen. Richard Burr. Nunes had already spoken on the record to refute the story, pushing the administration talking points to the press.

How deep does this run?

Were sitting U.S. politicians involved with a conspiracy to tamper with a national election by a foreign government? Who else was involved? I think we need the answers to several questions as soon as possible:

  1. What was the motivation for Sessions lying under oath? What was the motivation behind the now revealed Trump campaign meetings between campaign officials and Russian intelligence agents in European cities?
  2. What is Trump hiding in his tax returns? We need to know why the Russians have such a strong interest in Trump and that can start by revealing the full extent of his financial ties.
  3. Was anything exchanged between Russian intelligence agents and Trump campaign officials? Information? Money?

An unholy trinity of mystery has announced itself: We need to know about motivations, exchanges and potentially compromised individuals regarding Trump and Russia. There is a lot more information that needs to come out.
